Cultural Research Project

The Ask:

Create a complex mood board inspired by a country/culture. Include color swatches and symbols that represent your selection.

Process

1. Selecting a country/region:

I selected Southern India. I chose Southern India because of how beautiful of a country it is! I selected the south specifically due to the underrepresentation in media. While talking to one of my close friends, she voiced her frustration to me about the underrepresentation of Southern Indian culture in America. It quickly became something that I wanted to deeply educate myself upon.

2. Researching Cultures, Religions, & Values

Preparing for this project, I deeply researched the region of Southern India. I felt this was a crucial step in properly capturing the beauty of the country. Looking into the architecture, religions, rituals, holidays, traditions, etc. and comparing them to those in Northern India was particularly important.

3. Piecing Together a Mood Board

I selected a wide variety of images that represent Southern India. Grabbing images of their national birds, flowers, etc. Along with that, we see their ceremonial structures and symbols.

After selecting all of my images,

  1. I used photoshop to firstly remove the background of images and cut out specific parts of photos

  2. Changed the lighting, dimness, brightness, size, etc. on each image to fit the exact look I was aiming to achieve

  3. Pieced together all of the 50+ images to be cohesive and representative of the region

Final Work

4. Finding Proper Representations of Colors & Symbols

Nearing the end of this project, I selected six colors that most represent Southern India. I chose symbols based on their cultural iconography. Some of these symbols included a feather of their national bird, the peacock, their national animal, an elephant, a lotus, and more. The colors consisted of many colors found in local artworks, as well as colors often worn. These range from beautiful shades of red, to gold, to green!
